當 Ingres 安格爾的La Grande Odalisque (下圖)在巴黎沙龍展出, 被評及像是插畫般的完美而不真實. 安格爾了解藝術如同詭計, 不是真實, 基於藝術的抽象美, 藝術家所表達的可以讓觀賞者欣賞作品的真善美. 在安格爾的時代, 是被不認同而有誤解, 但他的理念繼續被馬諦斯及畢卡索應用傳承.
